Objective: Attachment styles, as one of the most important psychological constructs, play a significant role in mental health, academic adjustment, and the quality of interpersonal relationships. The present study aimed to systematically review the literature on the role of attachment styles in academic adjustment, mental health, and interpersonal relationships.
Method: This study was conducted using a structured narrative review approach. Published studies between 2020 and 2025 were retrieved from national and international databases and reviewed to examine the role of attachment styles in academic adjustment, mental health, and interpersonal relationships.
Findings: The review findings indicated that secure attachment is associated with better mental health, psychological well-being, improved academic achievement and adjustment, and higher-quality interpersonal relationships. In contrast, anxious and avoidant attachment styles were associated with increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, academic difficulties, and challenges in social relationships. Furthermore, variables such as resilience, self-regulation, emotional intelligence, empathy, and social support were found to play mediating or moderating roles in many studies.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that these relationships are primarily explained through correlational associations, statistical prediction models, and conceptual mediation mechanisms, while the existing evidence is insufficient to establish direct causal conclusions. From a clinical perspective, attachment styles play a crucial role in various dimensions of psychological and social functioning. Therefore, considering attachment styles in educational, counseling, and therapeutic programs may contribute to promoting mental health, improving academic adjustment, and enhancing the quality of interpersonal relationships.
